The idea of the superman in Nietzsche’s works is a crucial element as he uses it as a foundation from which to attempt to challenge the ingrained values of society. These values behind what is considered to be good and evil, he asserts, having been founded on the Christian faith serve only to hamper human potential and have no basis on our everyday experiences (486-487, The Portable Nietzsche by Viking Press). His aim is to show us that for society to be able to live up to its true potential we need a new system of values which is more suited to our needs. In rejecting the idea of a God who gives us values changeless and transcendent of the everyday world he gives us superman, a real individual who creates values which are firmly rooted in the everyday changing world. This is someone who, by trusting his own intuitive sense of what is good and evil, succeeds better than any other. It is argued that only by following his example can we hope to improve ourselves and our society. Is the necessity of overthrowing the existing established values justified in Nietzsche’s doctrine, and does he in fact prove that his alternatives are any better?
Mankind, in order to justify its existence, has always required some belief in a higher purpose in life. People are never satisfied with the notion that there is no meaning in anything they do or accomplish. Without such a belief, life becomes impossible to bear as the question asked by nihilism is continually before one, "why live at all?"

The idea of God and Christianity was one successful solution to this problem. It redefined the way in which to view the world, telling us that there is actually much more going on than what we are normally aware of. In so doing it makes the idea of God necessary and inextricable from it. God the changeless omnipotent being outside of this world gives us transcendent values about what is good and what is evil which are the same for all men who are supposed to be equal. Christianity holds that this world is inherently evil and to abide by its practices is to be in direct conflict with God’s will. So success in this world is measured not in how well one survives or how much material wealth he accumulates but by how well one adheres to these values. This works for one no matter how miserably he gets along as his eyes presumably are always focused on the rewards or punishments which await in the next life.

One of the key points about Christianity that made it so successful was in the way that it addressed the question of suffering. Ever since there has been man there has been suffering in man, it abounds everywhere and is something which is impossible to ignore. Through the idea of asceticism in this religion, suffering was "interpreted" Nietzsche claims, and put, "in the perspective of guilt" (454). Though not attempting to alleviate suffering, asceticism gave it a purpose, comforting those it afflicts through the principle that the more the world makes one suffer the more reward he will have in the afterlife. This is so because one suffers by choosing to deny the world’s evil influences which manifest themselves in his natural desires (examples being: sex, the lust to rule and selfishness). Since these desires are wholly of this world, therefore running contrary to the good given us by God, they are to be suppressed at all costs. So, according to the ascetic belief, the more we suffer in this world the better our rewards will be in the next.

Nietzsche dismisses this answer to nihilism. As effective as it is he finds fault with it in that it serves to make one feel ashamed of himself and the world. In so doing this belief extinguishes an individual’s hope of fully realizing his own powers and strengths as such things are viewed in a negative light as being worldly thus evil. Nietzsche holds that such suppression tends to undermine an individual making him sickly and weak physically and psychologically (144-145); such a thing imposed upon society would naturally lead to a sick and weak population. Not seeing any overall gain in a system of beliefs which teaches suppression, he purposes to give us a new one which is not only said to be as effective but also frees us of Christianity’s binds. With his doctrine of the superman Nietzsche seeks to give us values that at the same time, create a medium where power is realized and strength flourishes, and define a purpose for life.

The superman is someone who in discovering himself (306) also discovers that it is in his best interests to reject any outside notions about values, trusting rather what he finds within himself. He creates his own good and evil, based on that which helps him to succeed or fail. In this way good is something which helps one to realize his potential and evil is whatever hampers or stands in the way of this effort. Since to Nietzsche everything in the world, including good and evil, is transitory (228) everything is being continually reinvented. The superman embraces this idea of change which to him appears evident, he understands the fact that since there is nothing in the world which is permanent whatever exists must eventually be overcome by something else which comes along. Seeing himself and his values in the same light he knows that these aspects must also be overcome by something stronger if not by him than by someone or something else. So in order to keep up with the times he continuously reinvents himself over and over always building something stronger, more powerful, on top of what went before. The superman therefore is the ideal of someone who has mastered the practice of overcoming himself.

The source of his strength lies in the cherishing of the same natural desires restricted in Christianity. Sex for him is, "a great invigoration of the heart", the lust to rule a "gift giving virtue" (in that it allows new ideas and life to ascend to those "pure and lonely self-sufficient heights" which "should not remain lonely and self sufficient eternally"), and selfishness is "blessed, wholesome [and] healthy" (301-302). He sees these insatiable desires as the best of all possible good since they act as the driving force behind his insatiable need to overcome, they spur him on always seeking their ever demanding satisfaction.

It is from the example of the superman that we are intended to see how much is actually attainable in the world. The values he creates he continually tests himself always refining them to be better and better still. In this way they rise above the values of the masses (the weaker, the unwise) until they arrive at the top and being superior to any other they serve as the guidelines for the rest of society. They remain on top until another superior system of values comes along and usurps it. In this way a society is created which, by allowing the stronger to prevail, promotes strength. Nietzsche deems this a healthy society as it always strives to heighten its potential and is founded upon the attributes of the healthiest individual who exists. It is a macroscopic version of the same sort of overcoming which occurs in the superman and is labeled healthy because weakness is discouraged in favor of a medium in which strength and superiority are pushed to the level of utmost importance.

In this system the question "why live?" asked by nihilists is answered in man’s striving to overcome himself. The superman sees mankind as a bridge which has no end (310) which always stretches still further and further. Thus mankind is aware of no ultimate limits. Each life is valuable as it can serve mankind by helping to push its potential ever higher, making it that much stronger, elevating it another step out of the comparative wretchedness which existed before this process was begun.

Suffering is also addressed here. We are told that not only can suffering be suppressed but the alleviation of it is also possible. Though suffering is at times necessary the superman redeems himself from it in his constant creating. This creating which allows him to overcome himself and through trial thus leads to improvement he calls his "will’s joy" (199). So if in order to overcome himself he must create and in creating he feels joy if he is constantly overcoming then with all the resulting joy he experiences, naturally, very little room is left for suffering.

Which method best fulfills our needs and which works most effectively in everyday life?

One of the areas in which Nietzsche’s philosophy lacks is that to have any belief in it one must also come to grips with the fact that after death there is nothing more, the best we can hope for is to accomplish as much as we can while we live. This idea makes many uneasy, as the thoughts of at one point being then at another not being can be a frightening prospect. This is the gap which Christianity fills, it tells us that there will never be a point at which an individual ceases to exist, though he may change forms, he never dies. For some this is enough to justify the requirements which Christianity lays on them. But an argument may be made that the idea of an afterlife in a doctrine betrays a fundamental weakness as there is no empirical evidence for it, it could be nothing more than a tempting lure for those afraid of death. It exists and survives only through this key element, this reinventing of the world in a way which can not either be proved or disproved, by placing itself at the center of it. So if the concept of God is broken then nothing else about the system holds true (514). For the superman since there is no proof of an afterlife it would then be a fatal mistake to assume it exists only because someone says so. For him, since there is no afterlife, to do anything other than make the most of this life would be unthinkable.

Ultimately it all boils down to the nature of belief. You cannot convince someone of the superiority of the superman idea to any other if they already have an unshakable faith in Christianity because the two are mutually exclusive. But since, Nietzsche asserts, the idea of Christianity in these modern times is becoming more and more unbelievable, we need to give the vast number of nonbelievers another system in which they can believe. For such individuals Nietzsche’s ideas are designed to make perfect sense. When one comes to terms with the fact that this life is all he has he will love it and strive to extract all the enjoyment he can from it (160). His natural desires not only underline the need to do so but make the enjoyment possible in the first place. So to him nothing could be more foreign and absurd than a system which attacks these roots of passion. Because it is clear that, "an attack on the roots of passion means an attack on the roots of life" (487). To adopt such a practice would serve to destroy the only thing one possesses. In this light, "the practice of the church is hostile to life" (487). Not only that but, carrying this view further, the afterworld is seen as a mere contrivance by the founders of the religion, its only purpose to mislead its followers into believing that the adoption of its values is so vital. From this angle the fact that these values promote a weakening and sickening of society shows it to be just as destructive as the nihilism it seeks to replace.

We see that an understanding of Nietzsche’s philosophy would not be complete without an understanding of the idea of the superman, the central and most crucial aspect about it. In eliminating the idea of God and the values attached to it in his system he is forced to give us a parallel substitute, that is, another god like figure from whom we may receive our new values in order to fill the void which is created. We get an individual who derives his strength from that which is tangible (namely, his own self) and dismisses that which cannot be plainly observed in the everyday world. Christianity in placing such a level of importance on the conjectures of the unseen (198) and dismissing that which is tangible becomes directly opposed to the former. The two doctrines, therefore, are each other’s exact opposites and can never be reconciled as the one’s good is the other’s evil and vice versa. With our western society having been so long in the habit of conforming to Christian values when a new and unfamiliar set of values is proposed one naturally cannot expect a complete acceptance of them to occur overnight. Nietzsche himself admits that though he believes that to many his ideas will make perfect sense the full realization, for most, of the drastic changes which they imply will not occur for quite some time to come (96). So though we are here given two equally important doctrines it seems for this present day and age, though it may be dying out, the idea of Christianity is more useful in that we as a whole are still far too reluctant to part with its ideas about life.

History
In Catholicism, the Rerum Novarum encyclical of Leo XIII (1891) was the starting point of a teaching on social questions that was expanded and updated all through the 20th century. Despite the introduction of social thought as an object of religious thought, Rerum Novarum explicitly rejects what it calls "the main tenet of socialism":

"Hence, it is clear that the main tenet of socialism, community of goods, must be utterly rejected, since it only injures those whom it would seem meant to benefit, is directly contrary to the natural rights of mankind, and would introduce confusion and disorder into the commonwealth. The first and most fundamental principle, therefore, if one would undertake to alleviate the condition of the masses, must be the inviolability of private property." Rerum Novarum, paragraph 16

The encyclical promotes a kind of corporatism based on social solidarity among the classes with respects for the needs and rights of all. Despite the explicit rejection of Socialism, in the more Catholic countries of Europe the encyclical's teaching was the inspiration that led to the formation of new Christian-inspired Socialist parties.

A number of Christian socialist movements and political parties throughout the world group themselves into the International League of Religious Socialists. It has member organizations in 21 countries representing 200,000 members.

Christian socialists draw parallels between what some have characterized as the egalitarian and anti-establishment message of Jesus, who–according to the Gospel–spoke against the religious authorities of his time, and the egalitarian, anti-establishment, and sometimes anti-clerical message of most contemporary socialisms. Some Christian Socialists have gone as far as to become active Communists. This phenomenon was most common among missionaries in China, the most notable being James Gareth Endicott, who became supportive of the struggle of the Communist Party of China in the 1930s and 1940s.

Christian socialism is not to be confused with certain parties with "Christian Social" in their names which are found in the German-speaking world, such as the contemporary Christian Social Union in Bavaria or the Christian Social Party in Austria-Hungary circa 1900. Such parties do not claim to be socialist, nor are they considered socialist by others. The term Christian Democrat is more appropriately applied to the contemporary parties.

Religious criticisms
Socialism was strongly criticized in the 1878 papal encyclical Quod Apostolici Muneris by Pope Leo XIII. It was again denounced in the 1931 letter Quadragesimo Anno. Socialists were accused of attempting to overthrow all existing civil society, and Christian socialism was deemed to be an oxymoron because of this. Pius XI famously wrote at the time that "no one can be at the same time a good Catholic and a true socialist".[1]

Doug Bandow, senior fellow at the libertarian Cato Institute, has alleged that what he sees as the government compulsion necessary for socialism contradicts the Apostle Paul's advice: "Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." (II Corinthians 9:7) Bandow continues: "Most important, the Christian faith recognizes that all human institutions are flawed, and that sinful men are likely to misuse their power....Is capitalism Christian? No. It neither advances existing human virtues nor corrects ingrained personal vices; it merely reflects them. But socialism is less consistent with several Biblical tenets for it exacerbates the worst of men’s flaws. By divorcing effort from reward, stirring up covetousness and envy, and destroying the freedom that is a necessary precondition for virtue, it tears at the just social fabric that Christians should seek to establish."

ILLUSION = An illusion is a distortion of the senses, revealing how the brain normally organizes and interprets sensory stimulation. While illusions distort reality, they are generally shared by most people.[1] Illusions may occur with more of the human senses than vision, but visual illusions, optical illusions, are the most well known and understood. The emphasis on visual illusions occurs because vision often dominates the other senses. For example, individuals watching a ventriloquist will perceive the voice is coming from the dummy since they are able to see the dummy mouth the words.[2] Some illusions are based on general assumptions the brain makes during perception. These assumptions are made using organizational principles, like Gestalt, an individual's ability of depth perception and motion perception, and perceptual constancy. Other illusions occur because of biological sensory structures within the human body or conditions outside of the body within one’s physical environment.

The term illusion refers to a specific form of sensory distortion. Unlike a hallucination, which is a distortion in the absence of a stimulus, an illusion describes a misinterpretation of a true sensation. For example, hearing voices regardless of the environment would be a hallucination, whereas hearing voices in the sound of running water (or other auditory source) would be an illusion.

Mimes are known for a repertoire of illusions that are created by physical means. The mime artist creates an illusion of acting upon or being acted upon by an unseen object. These illusions exploit the audience's assumptions about the physical world. Well known examples include "walls", "climbing stairs", "leaning", "descending ladders", "pulling and pushing" etc.

Optical illusions
An optical illusion is always characterized by visually perceived images that, at least in common sense terms, are deceptive or misleading. Therefore, the information gathered by the eye is processed by the brain to give, on the face of it, a percept that does not tally with a physical measurement of the stimulus source. A conventional assumption is that there are physiological illusions that occur naturally and cognitive illusions that can be demonstrated by specific visual tricks that say something more basic about how human perceptual systems work. The human brain constructs a world inside our head based on what it samples from the surrounding environment. However sometimes it tries to organise this information it thinks best while other times it fills in the gaps.[3] This way in which our brain works is the basis of an illusion.

Auditory illusions
Main article: Auditory illusion
An auditory illusion is an illusion of hearing, the sound equivalent of an optical illusion: the listener hears either sounds which are not present in the stimulus, or "impossible" sounds. In short, audio illusions highlight areas where the human ear and brain, as organic, makeshift tools, differ from perfect audio receptors (for better or for worse). One example of an auditory illusion is a Shepard tone.

Tactile illusions
Main article: Tactile illusion
Examples of tactile illusions include phantom limb, the thermal grill illusion, the cutaneous rabbit illusion and a curious illusion that occurs when the crossed index and middle fingers are run along the bridge of the nose with one finger on each side, resulting in the perception of two separate noses. Interestingly, the brain areas activated during illusory tactile perception are similar to those activated during actual tactile stimulation.[4] Tactile illusions can also be elicited through haptic technology.[5] These "illusory" tactile objects can be used to create "virtual objects".[6]

Other senses
Illusions can occur with the other senses including that of taste and smell. It was discovered that even if some portion of the taste receptor on the tongue became damaged that illusory taste could be produced by tactile stimulation.[7] Evidence of olfactory (smell) illusions occurred when positive or negative verbal labels were given prior to olfactory stimulation.[8]

Disorders
Some illusions occur as result of an illness or a disorder. While these types of illusions are not shared with everyone they are typical of each condition. For example migraine suffers often report Fortification illusions.

Philosophy and Illusion
Just like many other words often used in a different sense in spirituality the word "illusion" is used to denote different aspects in Hindu Philosophy (Maya). Many Monist philosophies clearly demarcate illusion from truth and falsehood. As per Hindu advaita philosophy, Illusion is something which is not true and not false. Whereas in general usage it is common to assume that illusion is false Hindu philosophy makes a distinction between Maya (illusion) and falsehood. In terms of this philosophy maya is true in itself but it is not true in comparison with the truth. As per this philosophy, illusion is not the opposite of truth or reality. Based on these assumptions Vedas declare that the world as humans normally see is illusion (Maya). It does not mean the world is not real. The world is only so much real as the image of a person in a mirror. The world is not real/true when compared to the reality. But the world is also not false. Falsehood is something which does not exist. if we apply this philosophy to the above example, the illusion is not actually illusion but is false. This is because in general usage people tend to consider lllusion to be the same as falsehood. As per adishankar's a guru of monist teachings the world we think is not true but is an illusion (not true not false). The truth of the world is something which can only be experienced by removing the identity (ego).

Axl dedicated this song to his wife after they divorced. It's obviously about being apart (that's what estranged means) from the one you love. I don't know why this isn't in their Greatest Hits album, it's one of their best. Aswell as for his wife, I wonder if Axl wrote this because he knew the band was spliting up? And what on earth is the video about? It's got 1)Dolphins flying out of aeroplanes...2)Dolphins flying out of billboards and...3)Axl jumping of an oil tanker (WTF!?)

This is one of my fav Gn'R songs. I think the lyrics are all about axl, as most of the band's lyrics are. I think many words in this song describe how axl really felt about life and the problems he always had dealin with people, such as right in the beggining when he says: When you're talkin' to yourself and nobody's home. You can fool yourself, You came in this world alone.

And if you watch the video, its like he wants to show the world and his fans he feels totally apart from the world and that no one really understand. I see that in the scenes where he is home alone, hiding from the police and later, being arrested. but what really got into me is the scene when he is walkin alone by rainbow bar "I'm out here on my own, and drifting all alone". man, he's so into his little world that he dives in this huge sea and refuses to be rescued by gilby :| and finally, some words that, for me, sum up the whole thing about guns n roses and they way it all ended... "I never wanted it to die" ;)

I think it's just your regular "living on without a loved one" song... as previously stated, it's a trilogy, with Don't Cry being the first, November Rain being second, and Estranged the third. If you watch the videos to each, in that order, it's clear what the intended meaning is. Estranged is simply about living without the person you love, whether it's because they've passed away or left you. It states that he's "jumped into the river too many times to make it home". I guess this is probably just your typical mourning behaviour, doing things that dig your hole deeper, and then later regretting them. Fantastic song, although probably dwarfed by it's big brother November Rain, in the mainstream musical world at least.

At one point, when I felt really bad, I thought this song was the best ever. I really did. But the only thing it made was more depressed. Then I got out of that blue state and started wondering what made it so special to me - and I found nothing.

See, I thought this song had fantastic lyrics, but, reading it again, I don't see any greatness. In fact, what I thought was the best line ("old at heart, but I'm only 28"), I heard later on the 1965 masterpiece Desolation Row by Bob Dylan ("on her 22nd birthday, she already is an old maid"). Then I started thinking maybe this song wasn't as revolutionary as I thought it was.

This song is a depressing tune. Really, you hear it when you're down and you'll feel even worse. It's not like Bruce Springsteen's Jungleland, where, despite the darkness pictured, there's a flash of hope in that last note. No, Estranged only brings you even more down.

And the lyrics, on a serious analysis, aren't all that great. This was the song that me think once that Axl Rose was the best lyricist in the world, and is the same that makes me now think that he is not as earth-shattering or brilliant as I thought he was. In fact, the words sang here are clich� and serve virtually no purpose at all. They pale in comparison to some great writers like Dylan, Springsteen, Waits, Waters, Knopfler or even Axl's former best friend, Izzy Stradlin. He just lacks that greatness and the ability to set a scene like those artists have.

Estranged tries to be deep and meaningful, but it really isn't. And there lies the problem - what it tries to be and doesn't achieve. It was made to be some kind of Incident On 57th Street or Tangled Up In Blue - a long lyrical masterpiece -, but it is far from that. It is not even anything like the other two big epics in the Illusions, Don't Cry and November Rain, which are good songs, unlike Estranged.

I prefer to not even write about the video, because my criticism would be even bigger.

On a side note, Slash's speech that Slash&Blues talks about was done before Nightrain at the Ritz in 1988, not Estranged, which hadn't even been written at that time.

August 25, 2010 "Yahoo Finance" -- The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) forecasts the U.S. budget deficit will hit $1.3 trillion this year. An astronomical figure, to be sure, but that’s lower than was projected in March. It’s also less than last year’s record $1.41 trillion deficit, which was close to 10% of GDP.
And, that's the good news.

As the deficit grows so does the national debt, which is currently more than $13.3 trillion, according to official figures.

But the situation is actually much, much worse, according to Boston University economics professor Laurence Kotlikoff.

“Forget the official debt,” he tells Aaron in this clip. The “real” deficit - including non-budgetary items like unfunded liabilities of Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security and the defense budget - is actually $202 trillion, the professor and author calculates; or 15 times the “official" numbers.

“Congress has engaged in Enron accounting,” says Kotlikoff, who recently penned an op-ed for Bloomberg entitled: The U.S. Is Bankrupt and We Don't Even Know It.

Yet, the debt market continues to have an insatiable appetite for U.S. Treasuries; heading into Monday's session, the yield on the 30-year Treasury bond (which moves in opposition to its price) was at its lowest level since April 2009.

Kotlikoff says that's because the market is focused on the "mole hill" of official debt. In time, the U.S. will have a major inflation problem to rival that of Germany's post World War I Weimar Republic, he predicts. “We have to think about the fact that unless the government gets its fiscal act in order we’re going to have the government printing lots and lots money to pay these enormous bills that are coming due over time.”

America is in need of major reform of the health-care, retirement, tax and financial system, Kotlikoff continues. “We need (to perform) heart surgery on this economy, not putting on more band-aids which is what we’ve been doing.”

Barring that, your hard-earned dollars will soon be worthless, he declares.

Don't come to us for a bailout either, suckers.

Economic systems today have way too many moving parts for anyone to understand. When we think we know how a system works, and try to modify it, we get unexpected side effects. Corruption relies on this chaos. It would be a lot easier to tinker with an economy where everyone works according to his ability and receives according to his needs. What we have now rewards greed and certain physical traits, and punishes hard work, diligence, and honesty. Clearly a better system can be devised.

What is really upsetting is that now that the controlled collapse is happening as I write this, Google/Verizon and other's are pushing ahead for the Internet2 which would effectively kill sites such as these. It is part of the effort to bring down the bars on the last vestiges of "democracy" in order to have a more controlled and willing population obedient to the corporate vision of serf owner society. The whole idea that there can be a non-violent way to resist the forced slavery ahead is also part of the problem. Sociopaths aren't even remotely interested in talking about solutions, they are immune to conscience. Watch Charlie Rose interview Lolyd Blankfein CEO of Goldman Sachs on the program page. At one point of the interview Charlie asks if it's OK to bet against your own clients, as Goldman has done. Blankfein says basically yes because he's a "market maker", or a kind of Wall Street god that can decide who lives or dies. And since Goldman's bet's of wheat futures caused millions to starve in 2006-2008 this is easy to imagine. At one point in the interview Blankfein starts to roll his eyes when Charlie asks, "What about the Americans hurt?" He is caught off guard and retreats but it's there on film. No it's very easy to be distracted by sites even like the Huffington Post which purport to be for the people and include articles on Third World America. There is a very naive assumption that the bankers/corporate owners will somehow see the misery that Americans are now living in and have a come to Jesus moment. If anything the elites as I write this are conspiring to murder as many as possible in order to level the playing field.

I also agree that this is a controlled economic collapse with the elite preparing to grab what they can and run for the exits. But this is nothing new, there's been a build up to this commencing with our coming off the gold standard and sound money in the 70's. Illegalism is an anarchist philosophy that developed primarily in France, Italy, Belgium, and Switzerland during the early 1900s as an outgrowth of individualist anarchism[1][2]. The illegalists openly embraced criminality as a lifestyle.

Emergence
Illegalism first rose to prominence among a generation of Europeans inspired by the unrest of the 1890s, during which Ravachol, Émile Henry, Auguste Vaillant, and Caserio committed daring crimes in the name of socialist anarchism, in what is known as propaganda of the deed.

Some anarchists, such as Johann Most, advocated publicizing violent acts of retaliation against counter-revolutionaries because "we preach not only action in and for itself, but also action as propaganda."[3] Most was an early influence on American anarchists Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman. Berkman attempted propaganda by the deed when he tried in 1892 to kill industrialist Henry Clay Frick following the deaths by shooting of several striking workers.[4] By the 1880s, the slogan "propaganda of the deed" had begun to be used both within and outside of the anarchist movement to refer to individual bombings, regicides and tyrannicides.

Influenced by theorist Max Stirner's egoism[5], the illegalists in France broke from anarchists like Clément Duval and Marius Jacob who justified theft with a theory of la reprise individuelle (Eng: individual reclamation). Instead, the illegalists argued that their actions required no moral basis - illegal acts were taken not in the name of a higher ideal, but in pursuit of one's own desires. Moreover, they were clearly meant to be exemplary , invitations to revolt."

Such acts of rebellion which could be individual were in the long run seen as acts of rebellion which could ignite a mass insurrection leading to revolution. Proponents and activists of this tactic among others included Johann Most, Luigi Galleani, Victor Serge, and Severino Di Giovanni. "In Argentina, these tendencies flourished at the end of the 20s and during the 30s, years of acute repression and of flinching of the once powerful workers movement –this was a desperate, though heroic, of a decadent movement."

Caricature of the Bonnot gangFrance's Bonnot Gang was the most famous group to embrace illegalism. The Bonnot Gang (La Bande à Bonnot) was a French criminal anarchist group that operated in France and Belgium during the Belle Époque, from 1911 to 1912. Composed of individuals who identified with the emerging illegalist milieu, the gang utilized cutting-edge technology (including automobiles and repeating rifles) not yet available to the French police.

Originally referred to by the press as simply "The Auto Bandits", the gang was dubbed "The Bonnot Gang" after Jules Bonnot gave an interview at the office of Petit Parisien, a popular daily paper. Bonnot's perceived prominence within the group was later reinforced by his high-profile death during a shootout with French police in Nogent.

Criticism
Advocacy of illegalism proved to be highly controversial and was contested within the anarchist milieu, particularly by those who favored anarcho-syndicalism over individual actions disconnected from the labor movement. Many socialists argued that illegalism replicated the mentality of capitalism and represented a turn towards nihilism.

Following his arrest for harbouring members of the Bonnot Gang, Victor Serge, once a forceful defender of illegalism became a sharp critic. In Memoirs of a Revolutionary, he describes illegalism as "a collective suicide".[10] Similarly, Marius Jacob reflected in 1948, "I don't think that illegalism can free the individual in present-day society... Basically, illegalism, considered as an act of revolt, is more a matter of temperament than of doctrine."

Contemporary egoist individualist anarchists such as Fred Woodworth (editor and publisher of the journal The Match!), Joe Peacott and Larry Gambone are also highly critical of illegalism on grounds that it is unethical.

Influence
Illegalism has been updated by currents such as insurrectionary anarchism and post-left anarchy. In Spain and Latin America in recent years a campaign called Yomango has apperared which advocates shoplifting and so it updates individual reclamation.

August 09, 2010 "Information Clearing House" -- It's no fun being on Washington's enemies list. Just ask Hugo Chavez. Last week, the Venezuelan president had to cancel a trip to Cuba after he was told that a coup was underway and his life was in danger. The information came from an anonymous source who had delivered a similar warning prior to the failed coup in 2002. The letter said: “The execution phase is accelerating..… There is an agreement between Colombia and the US with two objectives: one is Mauricio and the other is the overthrow of the government.… They will hunt down ‘Mauricio’ (and) try to neutralize part of the Armed Forces.” ("Venezuela Pushes for Peace", Coral Wynter, Green Left News)

“Mauricio” is Chavez's codename. Whoever is behind the coup, wants to kill Chavez.

There's no way of knowing whether Chavez is really in danger or not, but we shouldn't be too surprised if he is. After all, the US claims it has the right to kill anyone it sees as a threat to its national security, and Chavez surely ranks high on its list of threats. So it's wise to be careful. In any event, the warnings coincide with other unsettling developments. At a recent meeting of the Organization of American States (OAS), Colombian ministers charged Chavez with harboring guerrillas on Venezuelan territory. (The allegations could be used to justify a preemptive attack) Chavez reacted swiftly and broke off diplomatic relations with Colombia, but the row did not end there. Obama's nominee as US ambassador to Venezuela, Larry Palmer, threw a little gas on the fire by backing-up Colombia's claims. Now the two countries are at loggerheads which seems to be what the Obama administration had in mind from the very beginning. US policy towards Venezuela has changed at all under Obama. If anything, it's gotten worse.
US EXPANDS 7 BASES IN COLOMBIA

The Pentagon recently announced that it plans to expand 7 military bases in Colombia. State Dept officials said that the US merely wants to step up its counter-narcotics operations, but no one's buying it. Everyone knows the US wants to reestablish its control over the region. The military build up in Colombia is another way of ratcheting up the pressure on Chavez and fanning the flames of political instability in the hemisphere. Naturally, the base expansion has the region's leftist leaders worried that Latin America may be headed for another era of US-backed dirty wars.

Also, the internet is abuzz with stories that Obama is planning to deploy warships and ground troops to Costa Rica in the near-future. Here's an article on Alternet that lays out the basic theory:

"Rather than retooling its diplomatic approach to fit the new reality in Latin America, Washington is expanding its military footprint. It is will soon be operating out of seven military bases in Colombia and has reactivated its 4th Fleet, both highly unpopular moves in Latin America. Rather than taking the advice of countries in the region to demilitarize its war on drugs, the U.S. recently announced it is deploying 46 warships and 7,000 soldiers to Costa Rica to “interdict” drug traffic and money laundering." Although the rumors have not been verified, the anxiety is growing. The US has never played a constructive role in Latin America's affairs, and the prospect of more meddling and violence is frightening. The truth is, US intervention has continued even during relatively peaceful periods like the last decade. US intelligence agents and NGOs are sprinkled throughout the civilian population gathering information, swaying elections, and fomenting social unrest. Here's a clip from an article titled "America's Covert 'Civil Society Operations: US interference in Venezuela keeps growing" which shows how America's tentacles extend everywhere:

"Foreign intervention is not only executed through military force. The funding of “civil society” groups and media outlets to promote political agendas and influence the “hearts and minds” of the people is one of the more widely used mechanisms by the US government to achieve its strategic objectives. In Venezuela, the US has been supporting anti-Chavez groups for over 8 years, including those that executed the coup d’etat against President Chavez in April 2002. Since then, the funding has increased substantially. A May 2010 report evaluating foreign assistance to political groups in Venezuela, commissioned by the National Endowment for Democracy, revealed that more than $40 million USD annually is channeled to anti-Chavez groups, the majority from US agencies....

A large part of NED funds in Venezuela have been invested in “forming student movements” and “building democratic leadership amongst youth”, from a US perspective and with US values....In the last three years, an opposition student/youth movement has been created with funding from various US and European agencies. More than 32% of USAID funding, for example, has gone to “training youth and students in the use of innovative media technologies to spread political messages and campaigns”, such as on Twitter and Facebook.

NED has also funded several media organizations in Venezuela, to aid in training journalists and designing political messages against the Venezuelan government. ..What these organizations really do is promote anti-Chavez messages on television and in international press, as well as distort and manipulate facts and events in the country in order to negatively portray the Chavez administration... Yet such funding is clearly illegal and a violation of journalist ethics. Foreign government funding of “independent” journalists or media outlets is an act of mass deception, propaganda and a violation of sovereignty. It's hard to believe that a two-year senator from Chicago with a background in "community organizing" presides over this elaborate and opaque system of imperial rule. He doesn't, of course. The real leaders remain hidden behind the cloak of democratic government and all of Washington's phony institutions. Obama is merely a public relations hologram, a friendly face that conceals the machinations of a global Mafia. Other people--whoever they may be--control the levers of power moving the pieces as needed to assure the best outcome for themselves and their constituents. Now, it appears this shadow government has its eyes on Latin America once again. That's bad news for Chavez and anyone else who hoped that political instability and US black ops were a thing of the past.

Washington hates Chavez because he's raised living standards for the poor. (and because he won't bow to the giant corporations) That's why he's pilloried in the media, because his socialist model of democracy doesn't jive with America's slash and burn-style of capitalism. Chavez has enacted land and oil industry reform, improved education and provided universal healthcare. He's introduced job training, subsidies to single mothers, drug prevention programs, and assistance for recovering addicts. Venezuelans are more educated than ever before. Illiteracy has been wiped out.

Chavez's policies have reduced ignorance, poverty, and injustice. The list goes on and on. Venezuelans are more engaged in the political process than anytime in the nation's history. That scares Washington. US elites don't want well-informed, empowered people participating in the political process. They believe that task should be left to the venal politicians chosen by corporate bosses and top-hat banksters. That's why Chavez has to go. He's given people hope for a better life.

Movie director, Oliver Stone, summed it up perfectly in a recent interview with Nathan Gardels. He said, "The US remains hostile to anyone on the left coming to power in their "backyard," anyone who thinks the resources of a country belong to its people....For the first time in modern history, much of South America is beyond US control.....It is also beyond the influence of the US-dominated IMF."

The people of Venezuela are better off under Chavez; better fed, better educated, and with better access to medical care. The government safeguards their civil liberties and political activism continues to grow. Democracy is thriving in Venezuela. Hurrah for Hugo Chavez!

My travels to Venezuela prior to Chavez and after have shown a great difference. From the Airport to the capital, one could miles and miles of shacks that housed the poor. They have dissappeared when Chavez became their leader. More schools, More educated youngsters entering the community of the future of the country. A good 100% improvement....No more large poverty but educated youth that use their knowledge to assist others in their country and in foreign lands.

This song is so weak. I mean, the music is cool, with all the complicated time signatures and crap, but the whole concept reminds me of something a freshman poli-sci major would write. Actually, that's probably where Tools target audience is.

It's chock full of "neat" metaphores like "junkies" and "vampires" to describe the human race and it's consumption of the media, but it doesn't really make sense.

Wait, I would expect it to make sense to you, so before you say it, just shutup and go to the next post. You can't handle this. I don't want to hear your over-zealous defense to your vicarious addiction to Maynard's fabled acuity.

If people consumed media to fulfill some inborn need to see death, as Maynard asserts, then why does virtually every commercially sucessful movie produced end with a happy ending? And why does the news (probably the real focus of the song), despite it's reporting negative events, always contain more "facts", like weather or current events, than "death" and "bloodshed"? Wouldn't it be more rational to say that people watch the news to stay informed, and therefore keep themselves more aware of society?

These lyrics are esoteric at best, like most of Tools lyrics, except these symbols aren't as interesting as, say, an fist-fuck in the ass. I mean, he used "zombies". Come on.

This song is - pure and simple - about Nick Drake, a songwriter who died in 1974 (possible suicide on anti-depressants of all things!)

If you haven't listened to Drake's work, and you like Dream Academy, you should give a listen. It may not be as polished, but it's got 'the stuff'. Other artists directly influenced and affected by Drake's work include, The Cure (their very name comes from a Drake song!), Duncan Sheik, Howard Jones, and American Music Club.

Nick had is own small following - and it was small enough that he would often play out in the open of his small Northern England town of Tanworth-in-Arden. Here, Nick Laid-Clowes of the Dream Academy imagines what it must have been like to have sat down and listened to him.

Nick Drake never 'waved goodbye', and he never knew how successful he'd be some 30 years later, but he influenced a LOT of musicians and here the Academy pays homage to his memory.

The Dream Academy wrote it with Drake in mind, no question, but it's resonance is far broader, isn't it?

What was Britain like in 1984/85 when it was recorded and released? Thatcher, miners' strike, and so on. It looked back on 1960's not so much nostalgically, as a time when something broke and nothing was ever the same again. Places once full of life and hope maybe, but now there's no more work. So what are you left with but "the stony ground". It could be about any working class, industrial town really.

EMERGING FROM DEEP SECRECY, portions of the Protocols Of The Learned Elders Of Zion were brought to light in the late 19th Century in France.

It is a fascinating story, presented here in a unique, unprecedented and thoroughly documented fashion. Months of intense research has gone into this work.

In 1884, a Mademoiselle Justine Glinka, the daughter of a Russian general, was engaged in Paris in gathering political information for the court of Tzar Alexander III.

Glinka employed a Jewish agent named Joseph Schoerst, alias Shapiro, who had passed himself off as a Freemason and a member of the Mizraim Lodge, a Jewish Masonic order with its own particular rites and protocols. None other than Solomon Rothschild, scion of the Jewish banking dynasty, was a prominent member of the French Freemasons.

Schoerst offered to Glinka for the sum of 2,500 francs, a document which he said would interest her greatly. This document contained extraordinary dictated writings from assorted speeches which would later be included in the final compilation of the Protocols of Zion.

Glinka quickly passed the document to her immediate superior in Paris, General Orgeyevski, who sent them, in turn, to General Cherevin, Minister of the Interior, for transmission directly to the Imperial Court in St Petersburg.

Upon Cherevin’s death in 1896, he willed a copy of his memoirs containing the Protocols to Tzar Nicholas II. (View Sources Here, Here & Here.)

Glinka’s information eventually found its way into the hands of one Sergei Nilus, a highly educated Russian mystic attached to Tsar Nicholas II’s court who served as Minister of Foreign Religions.

In 1902, Nilus published, “The Rule of Satan on Earth - Notes of an Orthodox Believer,” in which he cites excerpts from this early aggregation of the material first purchased by Madame Glinka.

Next stop for the Protocols occurred in 1903 when a prominent publisher by the name of Pavel Krusheva quoted writings from the Protocols in his daily newspaper, Znamya. After its publication, Krusheva suffered an attempt on his life and from that moment on, he lived in constant fear and had to carry weapons for his own protection. He also took the step of being accompanied by a personal cook to prevent being poisoned.

In 1905, Sergei Nilus published a new edition of his “Rule of Satan” which included a complete version of the Protocols as the final chapter. This was the first time a full compilation of the Protocols had been made available to the general public in book form.

In 1917, (the same year of the final Russian Revolution), Nilus had prepared a final edition – fully documented - but before he could distribute it, Kerensky, a half-Jew, who had succeeded to power after the Revolution, had most of the copies destroyed. Anyone caught by the Bolsheviks in possession of The Protocols was shot on the spot.

In 1918, the Protocols appeared again in a Moscow periodical, The Sentinel, marked by the Jewish-led Bolsheviks as a counter-revolutionary newspaper. In February, 1919, the Bolsheviks ordered the newspaper shut down.

In 1924, Professor Nilus was arrested by the Jewish-dominated “Cheka,” imprisoned, and then tortured. OF GINSBERG & PINSKER

THE DOMINATING FIGURE of the growing Zionist movement of the late 1800s, was a Jew by the name of Asher Ginsberg, who adopted the pseudonym, “Achad Ha’am,” meaning “one of the people.”

The son of a Jewish tax collector, Ginsberg was born in Kiev and later settled in Odessa, the Jewish center of activist agitation. Here he established in 1889 his Zionist group, “Sons Of Moses.”

Steeped in the works of Nietzsche, it was to the Sons of Moses that Ginsberg delivered his “protocols” for the annihilation of Christian culture and the ascendancy of Jewish nationalism based on Nietzsche’s own nationalistic vision for Germany.

The meetings of this secret society were held in Ginsberg’s house. Among the first members were: Ben Avigdor, Zalman Epstein, Louis Epstein, and Jacob Eisenstaat.

In early 1889, Ginsberg had broken with the more conservative forces of Zionism and moved into a radical position with his pamphlet, “This Is Not The Way.”

The intent of Ginsberg’s pamphlet was to oppose the “politically expedient” views of his former mentor, Leon Pinsker, a leader of the Lovers of Zion movement. Ginsberg wanted to first form a “national consciousness” in diaspora Jewry and the revival of conversational Hebrew prior to using political influence, as Pinsker promoted, for the establishing of a Jewish state.

Differences notwithstanding as regards timing, Pinsker did not differ from Ginsberg in the use of power to achieve their shared Zionist goals. In his book, “Auto-Emancipation,” Pinsker described the master-method to bring about this “self-emancipation” and to “restore the Jewish nation:”

A striking similarity to Pinsker’s political programme is found in Protocol No. 1:

Following in the footsteps of his mentor, Ginsberg’s forceful rhetoric, yet with a novel and direct appeal to fanaticism, also resembled the style of The Protocols when he insisted:

Ginsberg’s call for an aggressive Jewish nationalism is clearly mirrored in Protocol No. 5:

It is through persons who lived in Odessa at that time that information was obtained that a manuscript of the “Protocols” in Hebrew was circulated among the Jews.

Later, a Jew by the name of Herman Bernstein, publisher of the “Free Press” of Detroit, while claiming the Protocols to be a forgery, admitted in the presence of William Cameron secretary to Henry Ford, that he had personally read the Protocols in their published Hebrew form in Odessa.

During the Jewish-led Bolshevik Revolution, few towns were so torn as Odessa, where Ginsberg taught the destruction of Christian society, a basic tenet of The Protocols.

Among other outrages such as the raping of Christian women and girls, a Christian orphanage was destroyed and all the children shot to death. Racism and a deadly mockery of non-Jewish life was already an established practice of world Zionism.

LEARNED ELDERS

CLASSIFIED US INTELLIGENCE DOCUMENTS investigating international financial issues surrounding WW I were compiled in August 1919. These sensitive documents were given SECRET classification until 1973.

A hard copy of this document may be obtained from US National Archives in Washington DC - its number is 245-1.

On page 5 of the document, the public writings of Theodore Herzl, hailed as the father of world political Zionism, are cited as having “identity of thought found in the Protocols.”

This long-suppressed, finally declassified document, displays striking similarities between Herzl’s essay published in 1897 titled “The Jewish State” and Protocols 1 and 20:

Theodore Herzl: “Every point which arises in the relations between nations is a question of might. I do not here surrender any portion of our prescriptive right when I make this statement.

In the world as it now is and will probably remain, might precedes right. For us to be loyal patriots as were the Huguenots who were forced to emigrate is therefore useless. The Jews must acquire economic power sufficiently great to overcome prejudice against them.

CLOSELY ASSOCIATED WITH THEODORE HERZL, was Max Nordau, who convinced the Zionist leader to organize the First Zionist Congress of 1897.

Nordau was born Simcha Sudfeld in 1849 in Budapest and later changed his name to create a “Gentile” public face. It was at the First Zionist Congress, held in Basel, Switzerland, that Nordau was elected to serve as Vice President to the Presidency of Herzl.

I think that this song means that in capitalist societies people are cloned and crowded together, and personal liberty is lost in neoliberal corporate capitalist systems. Where people are not supposed to be alone, and just be followers slaves, crowded like ducks. Having said that, i think that this song is also related to "People are Strange" by The Doors, and the song "Subdivisions" by Rush, which is an anti-capitalist song, a critisism against the way capitalism enslaves individuals. The Philosophers Max Weber, Emil Durkheim and Karl Marx also wrote about alienation in capitalist corporatist societies.

Another thing that i would like point out is that this song goes hand in hand with the philosophy of Fredrich Nietzsche's Superman and Arthur Shopenhauer. According to Fredrich Nietzsche and Arthur Schopenhauer superior individuals (The Superman) feel best when they are alone, while the capitalist oppressed sheeple and slaves perform their best when they are crowded like ducks in a room, or like for example the so called "Love Parade" of Germany where a lot of capitalist slaves went there because they felt real empty and inferior alone.

My suggestion to you all is to love loneliness, to reject girls, to reject all friends, all company, all close contact and to be alone. Only in extreme loneliness we can be great.
